marks

“Marks” is an exploration, a travel through time, space, and the many states and dimensions of the human soul.  Mark Snyder is a human specimen, a muse, and collaborator. Over the past few years Mark has allowed me to scrutinize the depth of his existence on canvas, paper, and plexiglass.  Paintings are layered with multiple sittings spanning years of poses from 2005-present at times visible on a single canvas via pentimenti. This ghost-like layering effect reflects on the change in style and attitude of both the model and the artist. The images are a result of “unposed” poses that are arrived by mutual contemplation of the artist and the model. The viewer is invited to participate in actively deciphering this visual x-ray of time. “Marks” is physical evidence of the unique process with mark-making that is dictated by continuous change. “Marks” is therefore both a literal title referring to the complexity of a single being, a type of living portrait, as well as the metaphor for an artist’s search on an expanding visual vocabulary.

Exhibition premiered in 2013 at the Hinge Modern, Los Angeles.
