Illumination : artist statement

Illumination is a snapshot in paint. In these paintings I strive for an unposed pose – a person caught in the moment. I look for the inner light that illuminates the being, and work to capture the luminosity in paint. In this process there is a trinity of exchanges: what the model is willing to offer, how the artist perceives the physical and emotional presence of the sitter, and finally the individual interpretation of the viewer.

Particles of light travel between the sitter reflecting back into the artist’s eye, onto the canvas completing their journey with the on-looker. These paintings are truly collaborative – my job is that of a translator, a mediator between the sides of inception and perception. If the model is not there, or the viewer is not looking – the art would not be possible.
